The Beaches of Cyprus
There are two separate regions of beach to choose from: the western peninsula and the eastern peninsula. If you want to have a lazy afternoon with no tourists with noisy kids then you need to go to the western side. It is filled with quiet backwaters and ancient coves that are perfect for couples, especially honeymooners. The eastern side is more tuned to excitement, especially for families. It is most known for it’s shallow waters and fine white sand. Snorkeling and scuba diving are very popular because of low water.
Phinikoudes Beach is the most well known beach in Cyprus. It is over 500 meters long with fine grey sand adjacent to a calm ocean with very few waves. Purchasing souvenirs will be easy with the shopping markets located almost on the beach areas. If you wish to stay on the beach there are numerous hotels available and restaurants are also nearby. If you cannot stay close to the beach and you are driving, there are many parking lots that are easily accessible. Bus transportation is the most popular means of getting to the beach area. While at Phinikoudes Beach make sure to admire the towering palm trees. In the 1920’s the palm trees were planted as babies and are now the main reason for the name of the beach. Phinikoudes means “small palm trees”.
Kapparis Beach is not as popular with the tourists as Phinikoudes is but it is perfect for those wishing for privacy. It is located right outside of Paralimni with calm waters and miles of golden sand. This is not the beach to go to for shopping because it is a very secluded area with very little amenities.
If you plan on staying in the city of Agia Napa then Pernera A Beach will be your daytime attraction. Over 350 meters long with golden sand, the Pernera A Beach is bursting with tourists which is the main reason for the life guard on duty. This beach is popular among the water sport lovers because of the wave action. The water on this beach is not very calm so don’t plan on sun bathing in the water. The beach access is very easy to get to by foot or bicycle.
While visiting the city of Pafos you will probably put your toes into the sand on Pachyammos Beach. Also called Pachyammos Bay, it is a very narrow beach but it is one of the most exciting beaches with all of the water sports, restaurants, and other fun things to see nearby. They are noted for their cleanliness and this is due to the fact that the beach is cleaned every day.
